The
last time Pobst and Galati competed as a team here at Road America was in 2004
when Galati and his Champion Audi RS6 held off the pole sitting Audi of Pobst
to win his third World Challenge race here in Wisconsin. Pobst was a close second. Galati scored another GT win for Audi at Road
America in 2002 on his way to winning the GT championship.
Pobst,
whose only World Challenge win here at Road America
came over a decade ago, is hoping to accomplish some of that Galati magic this weekend to help maintain
his slim 13-point lead over Andy Pilgrim.
After Randy's repeat win at Watkins Glen in June GT Points" leader Randy
Pobst and Michael Galati are hoping to find a way to counteract only acceptable
finishes at Mid-Ohio as Pobst’s sixth-place finish was his worst of the 2008
campaign.
"Despite recent adjustments and the added
REWARDS weight my Porsche is a great handling car,” said Pobst. “We are up against very tough competition
here in SPEED GT and considering that our competition has 50 to 100 percent
bigger engines and their cars weigh about the same as our Porsches which are
amazingly fast which is a credit to both Porsche and the K-PAX/3R Racing crew.
“I
think if we can finish in the top five that will be good for us on this track
given where our competition is right now,” said Pobst. “But, I am extremely happy to have Porsche on
top of the heap for the Manufacturers’ Championship and happy to be in the lead
for the Drivers’ Championship and we plan on doing everything we can to hang on
to that.”
“I
have won a lot of races here at Road America and I simply love this
place, it is one of the best race tracks anywhere, but it is hard to say that
we have a chance of winning, because we are at a little bit of a disadvantage
here,” said Michael Galati with his usual casual smile.
“Our
K-PAX/3R racing guys have given us great handling Porsches, but those long
straights are tough for us against those big V-8s and the advantage the Porsche
used to have under braking is gone because our cars weigh about the same and
they have ABS and they have larger tires.
“But
we will give it everything we have and see how things work out on Sunday. It ought to be interesting.”
“Road
America is a great and classic natural terrain circuit and I love racing here
because this track has some really great and challenging turns,” agreed Pobst. “How can you not love racing a Porsche on a
great track like Road America?”
Randy
Pobst leads the GT points’ chase by 13 over Andy Pilgrim (503 to 490) with Brandon
Davis third with 455. Michael Galati is
in fourth with 404. The K-PAX/3R Racing
Team has Porsche atop the Manufacturers’ Championship Presented by Racer
Magazine with 31 points as Cadillac is second with 29 and Ford is third with 28.
Pobst
and Galati and the rest of the GT competitors will qualify for Round Six of the
SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship Presented by Remington
here at Road America at 12:10 pm Central Time on Saturday, Aug. 9, with the exciting
50-minute sprint race scheduled to start at 2:45 pm Central Time on Sunday,
June 10th.
The
race can be seen on SPEED, Thursday, August 20, at 12:00 pm Eastern Time.
