Motorsports Development Group (MDG) and team driver Alec Udell complete their first 2012 Pirelli World Challenge Race of the Season

The Woodlands, TX -

Motorsports Development Group (MDG) and team driver Alec Udell completed their first 2012 World Challenge race of the season in The Streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. Udell qualified the MDG #16 Ford Mustang Boss 302R in 3rd position.

World Challenge

Race 1 – Saturday: After a remarkable run qualifying 3rd amongst a celebrity packed field, Alec fell prey to a mechanical gremlin in his new Ford Mustang BOSS 302R. During the parade lap, Udell radioed to the MDG Team that something was wrong with the car. The rear differential had blown. Udell did not even get to take the green flag under power but was able to cross the start line and obtain race points in addition to his qualifying points. Working against time the MDG crew along with the support of Ford teammate Capaldi Racing changed the entire rear axle assembly on Udell’s car while on Pit Lane. While two crew members ran back to the transporter to get the spare rear axle assembly the rest of the crew went to work and began to pull out the broken one.

Both teams had the rear axle assembly in and ready to lower the car when a full course caution came out simultaneously with the white flag. Watching the two teams unite like that and change an ENTIRE rear axle on Pit Lane in just 30 minutes was one of the most incredible sights of the weekend. More people were watching the team try to make the swap than they were race.

Race 2 – Sunday: Due to Saturday’s misfortune which resulted in Udell not to be able to take a lap forced him start 19th. Regardless of being that far back in the field he had an amazing start and picked up five spots in the first lap. Running his best lap time of 1:22.013 he was able to catch the field. Udell masterfully worked his way up to 7th place. Unfortunately due to an electrical issue at the 25 minute mark causing the car to lose power above 6,500 rpm and losing 2 sec per lap including a brief pit stop. He brought home a clean car in 14th finishing position.

“First off thank you to Stuart Robinson, the MDG Team, Capaldi Racing, and Ford Racing for all their efforts this last weekend. We proved that we are competitive and fast but we still have some bugs to work out of our new platform. Even with these some minor setbacks I am very confident that we will be very competitive in our run for a World Challenge GTS championship and a podium at the next event. Once again thank you MDG, Capaldi Racing, R Squared Racing and FORD Racing; you guys were awesome.”

Stuart Robinson MDG Team Principal stated, “I’m very proud of our team and Alec. This was an emotional weekend after Qualifying 3rd and then not even taking the start. This is a brand new team and to see everyone unite like they did was just absolutely amazing. I personally would like to thank our MDG crew guys, Capaldi Racing, and Ford Racing. This weekend is the testament of the Ford Racing family and why we decided to combine our efforts with the Ford Family.”

On another note, The Long Beach Grand Prix will not allow Alec to race because of age so the team will run their next race at the Utah Grand Prix on April 27th 2012.
