TruSpeed’s Tomy Drissi, driving the #47 Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter Porsche 911 GT3, finished 8th in Saturday’s race and 7th in Sunday’s race, while 16-year old Madison Snow, driving the #46 Zoro Tools 911 Porsche 911 GT3, finished 9th Saturday and 8th Sunday.
Saturday’s race saw extended caution periods, the first one caused by polesitter Randy Pobst stalling his Volvo at the start and being heavily impacted from behind by a car starting further down the grid. A full course caution consumed the first 12 laps of the race, and while Aschenbach was able to pull closely behind Johnny O’Connell’s rear bumper, there simply wasn’t enough time spent under green for him to pass for the lead. The race finished under caution for a second incident, cutting short what the team felt was a ripe opportunity to pull back points from championship leader O’Connell.
Team Manager Tyler Tadevic said, “We missed the setup on Lawson’s car a bit for initial qualifying, so he was only able to qualify in 4th position, but in the end all three of our guys had solid cars under them. With so few green flag laps in the race Saturday, there wasn’t much opportunity for the strengths of our Porsches to come into effects, so we had a bit of a bitter taste in our mouths after that race. That’s just how it goes sometimes, however.”
Aschenbach started Sunday’s race from the outside of the first row by virtue of his 2nd place finish Saturday, and was able to take advantage of O’Connell’s poor start to take the lead into the first corner. Lawson led the most laps of the race, but made a mistake in the lead which allowed O’Connell to pass him, and another late caution period prevented a late attempt for Aschenbach to pass.
Tadevic said, “It’s good that Lawson was able to jump Randy Pobst in the championship standings this weekend, but Johnny O’Connell was able to stretch his lead a bit by winning both races. It was a pleasure to have Tomy race with us, and he was his typical solid self all weekend, getting faster and staying out of trouble.”
“It was a treat having Madison Snow and his family with us again. He was fantastic in the Zoro Tools car and didn’t put a wheel wrong all weekend. It’s confidence-inspiring to see him learn so much and perform so well at this stage in his career, and we’re looking forward to having him back again. Our crew performed - as they always do - perfectly, and we’re leaving Detroit with our heads held high. We’re really thankful to the Zoro Tools folks for their sponsorship, and hopefully they’ve got a good taste of what’s possible in motorsport. We’ve got a couple of Canadian races coming up with IMSA GT3 Cup supporting Formula One in Montreal this coming weekend, then it’s off to Mosport for the twin bill in World Challenge again. We’re looking forward to getting back to racing and we’re hopeful of clawing back some points from the Cadillacs.”
TruSpeed Motorsports races next in Pirelli World Challenge at Mosport International Raceway, near Toronto, on June 22-23, 2012.
